building with constraints: why monochrome works
when every piece of visual decoration is stripped away, only hierarchy, whitespace, and typography remain.
for a long time, web design has chased gradients, glassy blurs, and saturated color palettes. while they have their place, they often act as crutches to mask poor layout and weak structure.
the power of zero color
color communicates emotion, status, and urgency. but when building a personal digital home, what you really want is clarity. pure black (#000000) and high contrast white (#ffffff) remove all ambiguity:
- absolute contrast: text is effortless to read in any environment.
- no aesthetic drift: black and white never goes out of fashion.
- focus on ideas: reader attention stays on words and code, not decoration.
“simplicity is about subtracting the obvious and adding the meaningful.”
typographic discipline
with no colors to denote status or distinction, typography bears the full weight of the interface. monospace fonts introduce structure and technical precision, while clean sans-serif bodies maintain comfortable reading rhythms.
restricting the entire site to lowercase text pushes this philosophy further. it removes artificial capitalization rules and creates a level, tranquil reading experience.
